OpenAI agreed to pay Oracle $30B a year for data center services

OpenAI has stepped forward as the client in Oracle’s previously undisclosed $30 billion-a-year cloud deal. CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the partnership on Tuesday through social media and a blog post, without confirming the reported sum.

Oracle announced the agreement in late June, sparking speculation about the buyer. The disclosure lifted Oracle’s stock to historic highs and bolstered founder Larry Ellison’s wealth.

According to OpenAI, the deal covers 4.5 gigawatts of capacity for Stargate, a $500 billion data center initiative involving OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. SoftBank is not involved in this particular contract.

Altman said OpenAI’s revenue has reached $10 billion annually, making the Oracle deal three times the company’s current recurring revenue.
