Tesla is reportedly behind on its pledge to build 5,000 Optimus bots this year

Tesla may not meet its 2025 goal of building 5,000 Optimus robots, with only a few hundred assembled so far this year, The Information reports. Citing two sources, the outlet said production is significantly behind schedule, putting pressure on Tesla to either catch up or delay the timeline.

The update coincides with a 12% revenue drop reported by Tesla for the second quarter, driven by declining EV sales and reduced energy business performance. During a Q2 earnings call, Elon Musk stated that production of the Optimus 3 model is expected to begin early next year.

Musk emphasized that the company intends to ramp up production swiftly, aiming for one million robots per year within five years — a goal he described as realistic.

This isn’t the first time Musk has made bold projections. In 2019, he predicted a million robotaxis by 2020 and later revised that timeline to 2024, though neither objective has been met.
